Roy Cohn and his Mama America: of his perceptions and  observations, and he had a lot of them, of the American High Society and his mobsters clients-friends. His silent and ever present companion, his "doll", the America of his conceptions, impressions, judgments, and the self-deceptions.

Roy Cohn was from the old, pre-WW2 German Jewish families (his family history is interesting and telling: his lawyer father was promised the judgeship if he married his mother), and he looks like a Nazi to me. Abwehr was the Jewish and the semi-Jewish Intelligence organisation, and I am sure that they did not miss to recruit him, and very early, maybe at birth. The rest became the elaborate play of the intelligence operation The Red Scare, performed with the gusto and perfection of the Abwehr's planners and strategists. And this seems to explain "almost everything", from the McCarthyism to Trumpism. I think, it is very likely that Cohn hated America, on some deeper than just the appearances level, and for some unknown yet reasons or without any.

Roy Cohn Counseled America’s Most Self-Serving Politicians, Even After Death | Film Stories | St. Louis | St. Louis News and Events

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from St. Louis News and Events | Riverfront Times, Riverfront Times.

How would Roy Cohn react if he knew that one of his greatest claims to posthumous fame would come as a character in Tony Kushner's award-winning play Angels in America? Would the man who never shied away from a television camera still believe there's no such thing as bad publicity, or would he be shocked and enraged by the depiction of his battle with AIDS (which led to his death in 1986) and his homosexuality, which he always denied?
Angels in America isn't mentioned in Matt Tyrnauer's Where's My Roy Cohn?, but it's a minor omission. His theatrical afterlife aside, the film is a thorough, informative portrait of one of the twentieth century's most repellent political footnotes. It's a story about political events both distant (the Red Scare and the McCarthy era) and relatively recent (the sexual politics of the '70s and '80s), and the rise of a certain carrot-hued New York real estate con man figures prominently as well. If you're interested in postwar history, you won't find a better or more concise account of Cohn's power and influence in American politics.
It's a strange story spanning several decades and historic moments, with Cohn lurking in the sidelines as a malevolent force. He was born into a well-off family used to exerting influence: His mother was considered a less than desirable matrimonial partner, but her family promised a prominent attorney that if married her, he'd be named a judge. He did and was. Cohn first attracted attention, just out of law school, as one of the more aggressive prosecutors in the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg spy case. Despite flawed judgments and questionable decisions, the Rosenbergs were executed; Cohn bragged about his role in their sentencing for the rest of his life.
Moving up the political ladder, a young Cohn was hired as counsel to Senator Joseph McCarthy and became a key player in one of the strangest episodes of American history, the Wisconsin senator's 1954 attempt to take on the U.S. Army with vague accusations of subversion. Cohn had developed a friendship (some say a romance) with fellow anti-Communist G. David Schine, heir to a hotel chain. When Schine was drafted into the army, Cohn badgered military commanders to give his friend special treatment and light duty. When these requests were ignored, Cohn convinced McCarthy to open an investigation of the military establishment. The resulting hearings were a grand political spectacle, a media train wreck of threats and innuendo, with rumors of Cohn's sexuality surreptitiously coming to light. (For a deeper look at the Army-McCarthy clash, see Emile de Antonio's Point of Order, one of the greatest political films ever made.)
Cohn was, by almost all accounts, a loathsome human being — one associate recalls that when you saw him, "You knew you were in the presence of evil" — but neither his personality nor his dubious ethics prevented him from rising in society. He was a frequent presence in the gossip columns, and briefly engaged to Barbara Walters. He rose in political circles as well. According to the almost equally odious Roger Stone, who worked in the same law firm, Cohn's manipulations were responsible for the 1980 nomination of Ronald Reagan and also helped discredit the vice-presidential bids of Thomas Eagleton in 1972 and Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.
It was during the Reagan era that the man whose motto was "Never admit you're wrong; Never apologize," fell from grace as rapidly as he had risen. He was disbarred for stealing from clients and coercing a dying and barely conscious man to appoint him as estate executor. His friends — many of whom claim that they always knew he was corrupt — turned away and his career crumbled.
If not for his second life in Kushner's play, Cohn's death might have pushed him into the shadows of American history. Why, then, is his story worth hearing more than 30 years later? One compelling reason, documented in Tyrnauer's film, is the company he kept.
In 1973, Cohn acquired a new client who would become one of his closest friends. That client would also eventually become President of the United States. Donald Trump, along with his father, had been accused of violating the Fair Housing Act by refusing to rent apartments to black applicants. Under Cohn's advice Trump neither apologized nor denied but reached an out-of-court settlement and claimed it was a victory. Donald Trump regarded Cohn as a mentor and, despite claiming to have broken ties with him in the '80s, still felt his influence decades later. Just two months into his term, irritated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the investigation of Russian election-meddling, he allegedly asked his staff, "Where's my Roy Cohn?"
One of the many virtues of Tyrnauer's carefully selected historical footage (which includes the only color images I've ever seen of the Rosenbergs and McCarthy) is that we see Cohn's flaws and foibles firsthand. For all of his gifts for lying and obfuscation, he's revealed as a remarkably self-aware monster. In a taped interview, he's asked to name his flaws and quickly admits to "a total failure to sympathize with the emotional element in life." Tyrnauer's film is a skillful summary of the flaws and the man, as well as of the times he influenced and the trouble he raised. It ends with a strong, cautionary message about the reckless and arrogant pursuit of power. Now whom do you suppose that warning is about?

"Now major terrorist forces in Syria and Iraq have been defeated and their plans on creating a caliphate have been ruined," Bortnikov told a Sochi meeting of the heads of intelligence agencies, security services and law enforcement agencies from 79 countries.

"However, groups active there continue controlling their international branches, deploying terrorists with combat experience to other countries with the goal of creating sleeper cells and building new criminal networks there," Bortnikov claimed.

According to the FSB chief, terrorist organizations have been cherishing hopes of creating regional branches in the Middle East, Africa, Afghanistan and Southeast Asia. "A process is underway on decentralizing ISIL [formerly the IS] activity and switching to a network principle of actions," he noted.

Another serious threat is the so-called autonomous jihad when lone wolf terrorists or small groups carry out terror attacks themselves, Bortnikov stressed.

Over 43,500 people involved in terrorism listed in the international counterterrorism database
Over 43,500 people involved in terrorism have been included in the international counterterrorism database created on the initiative of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), while a third of them are militants that fought in hotspots, the FSB director reported.

According to him, currently, the database "includes data on 116 terrorist organizations and 43,500 persons."

"Nearly a third of them are foreign terrorist militants," the FSB chief noted.

Bortnikov offered his colleagues from special services to use the database as one of the means of supporting counterterrorism activity. Forty-seven special services from 36 countries have access to the database by now, along with eight departments within international organizations, including the UN, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and Interpol.

Among the goals of security cooperation, Bortnikov listed uncovering the plans of heads of terrorist organizations, determining the main routes of transporting foreign militants and their gathering places and obtaining information on every criminal, including their online profile. He added that the exchange of information must be carried out in real time.

He also called on the security services to detect commercial enterprises under the control of terrorists and to eliminate terrorist financing schemes via the Hawala system.

Problem of unwillingness of IT companies to cooperate with special services in cybersecurity
The head of the Russian Federal Security Service has highlighted the unwillingness of IT companies to cooperate with special services in cybersecurity as a serious issue, as messenger services are the main communication tool between criminals.

"With its global coverage, the Internet is becoming the main platform for promoting the ideology of terrorism, recruitment and dissemination of information on ways to carry out terrorist attacks. Online messengers with a high level of cryptosecurity are still the main means of communication between criminals," he stated.

"In this regard, we see the unwillingness of several leading IT companies to cooperate with special services in the sphere of information security as a serious issue," Bortnikov underscored.

According to him, currently, there is a rising threat of terrorists using wireless networks that do not depend on cellular service or Internet access when carrying out terrorist attacks.

Roughly 7,000 dead, wounded across the globe due to terrorism in 2019
About 7,000 people have been killed or wounded in terrorist attacks across the globe in 2019 alone, Alexander Bortnikov reported.

"International terrorist organizations have suffered substantial damage thanks to vigorous efforts by our countries' intelligence community. However, large international terrorist organizations, primarily ISIL [the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, former name of the Islamic State, outlawed in Russia — TASS] and al-Qaeda have retained their capability to continue their criminal activities," Bortnikov stressed. "As a result, more than 1,500 attacks, which left about 7,000 people dead or wounded, have been carried out across the globe in 2019 alone."

This being so, intelligence services need to adjust their approach to the war on terror, increase the effectiveness of interaction, take concerted efforts, step up information sharing and intensify work in information environment, he noted.

Over 5,000 Russians who joined terrorists in hotspots identified
The Federal Security Service has identified more than 5,000 Russian nationals who travelled to hotspots to fight alongside terrorists, according to the FSB director. "More than 5,000 Russian citizens who travelled abroad to take part in the fighting alongside terrorists have been identified," Bortnikov said.

Criminal cases have been opened against almost 4,000 of them based on the obtained evidence.

Open governance in the knowledge society | Opinion

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from www.elvocero.com - RSS Results in opinion of type article.

In these intense and challenging moments, it is imperative to focus on articulating the life project for the Country that Puerto Rican society demands to give a clear and forceful response to the demand for good governance. The changes that citizens demand and demand our times in the quality of public services and government results are monumental and require immediate attention. To achieve this, it is essential to close the gap between the obsolescence of the parties, the bureaucracy sometimes disconnected and the emergence of a society more attentive and active to the performance of its government.
When responding to these demands, we must assume serious and firm commitments for the welfare of all. Only by articulating an open and transparent government can we realize the right of access to information and spaces for deliberation, authentic dialogue and reflective governance to strengthen the ability of citizens to engage in the search for solutions and decisions of matters that concern them.
According to Unesco, the transparency and access to information gap constituting an obstacle to the development of knowledge that undermines governance and the formulation of strategic public policies and programs in favor of the population's quality of life. In this sense, the transparency of information as a public good allows to generate knowledge and critical capacity to interpret, process and use the information and transform it into knowledge and knowledge to freely express their opinion, argue, solve problems and make decisions based on data for the Good of all. In turn, the right to free expression and access to information is an essential pillar of governance because it allows as many citizens as possible to contribute,
Faced with the current situation, it is clear that our society can never move forward if it does not have the information to generate knowledge and innovate to transform its reality. Citizens and organizations emerge as the only ones capable of promoting real changes that transcend the electoral to guarantee that the people are the true power and not that only a few come to power so as not to govern in favor of the common good. It is time for citizens to exercise their right to obtain the necessary information to demand accountability and raise the quality of democracy.

Colombian spy chief resigns over fake dossier that linked militants to Venezuela

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from intelNews.org.

Comando Conjunto de InteligenciaColombia’s military spy chief has resigned, after the Colombian president was found to have misused intelligence at a United Nations speech to blame Venezuela for allegedly aiding paramilitary groups. For many years, authorities in Bogotá have accused Venezuela of aiding armed groups such as the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). These groups have been engaged in a decades-long guerrilla war against the Colombian state. In 2017, the largest of these groups, the FARC, laid down its weapons and signed a peace treaty with the Colombian government. But the ELN has refused to follow suit, while a number of hardline FARC leaders recently announced that they would be resuming their armed struggle against the Colombian authorities.
In recent months, the rise of Venezuela’s Western-supported opposition leader Juan Guaidó has further-fueled tensions between Colombia and Venezuela. Bogotá has come out in support of Guaidó, while many anti-government Venezuelans, some of them armed, have sought refuge in Colombia. Colombia rejects Venezuela’s claims that it is giving shelter to terrorists and argues instead that it is providing humanitarian aid to Venezuelan refugees. In turn, it accuses Caracas of sheltering ELN and FARC guerrillas, a claim that the Venezuelan government strongly denies.
Last week, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Colombian President Iván Duque unveiled a dossier of evidence that purportedly proved beyond doubt Venezuela’s collusion with Colombian paramilitaries. Duque told the United Nations gathering that the collusion was supervised by no other than the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. But within hours of Duque’s speech, reporters who scrutinized the dossier found that much of the photographic evidence in it had been downloaded from the Internet. Moreover, the photographs were not taken in Venezuela, as Duque claimed in his speech, but in Colombia.
The revelations have dominated the news headlines in Colombia and Venezuela in the past week, with the Colombian government engaging in damage control. On Monday, General Oswaldo Peña, Colombia’s military intelligence chief, resigned over the fake dossier. General Peña directed the Comando Conjunto de Inteligencia (Joint Intelligene Command) of the Colombian Armed Forces, which was seen as the primary spy agency behind the information contained in the dossier. In his resignation letter, General Peña wrote that “as a general of the [Colombian] Republic” he was fully aware that he needed to take responsibility for his activities and the activities of his subordinates. President Duque has not commented on the general’s resignation.

Expert news and commentary on intelligence, espionage, spies and spying

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from intelNews.org.

Turkey SyriaSenior White House officials close to United States President Donald Trump believed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was bluffing when he threatened to invade northern Syria, according to sources. For over two years, most of northern Syria has been controlled by American-supported Kurdish militias, who were instrumental in helping Washington defeat the Islamic State. But the growing strength of the Kurdish forces alarmed Turkey, which views Kurdish nationalism as a bigger threat than the Islamic State.
Since 2016, Ankara repeatedly threatened to invade northern Syria and disarm the Kurdish groups, which it sees as terrorist. It had refrained from doing so due to the presence of American troops in the area. However, according to news website Axios, key officials in the Trump White House were convinced that Turkish President Erdoğan would not have his troops invade northern Syria even if the American forces pulled out. In making this claim, the website cites six unnamed sources “with direct knowledge of the situation”, some of whom were allegedly “in the room with the two leaders and had access to their phone calls going back several years.
In one of these phone calls, which took place in 2017, President Erdoğan allegedly informed the US leader of his government’s intention to “move in to take care of the Kurdish threat” in northern Syria. But President Trump cautioned him about making such a daring move. He reminded the Turkish leader that, by invading northern Syria, Turkey would become responsible for the tens of thousands of Islamic State supporters and their families who are kept in detention camps. Ankara would also face mass international condemnation and possible sanctions from the United States and Europe. Moreover, the US-trained and -supplied Kurdish forces would arguably create a military quagmire for Turkish troops in the region. At that point Turkey “would own” the problem and would not be able to “come to [the US] for help”, according to Trump.
The Axios report claims that, until last week, the White House thought that “Erdoğan would never actually go through with his long-threatened Syria invasion”, because doing so would be detrimental to Turkish interests in the region. Based on that conviction, President Trump finally decided to call Erdoğan’s bluff by pulling American Special Forces troops out of northern Syria, in the belief that Tukey’s response would amount to nothing further than a few airstrikes and small-scale cross-border incursions. That belief was behind the White House’s surprise decision to suddenly pull its troops from northern Syria, according to Axios’ sources.
The report did not mention whether the US Intelligence Community’s reports to the White House concurred with the US President’s conviction that Turkey would not invade northern Syria even in the absence of US troops. The question is, in other words, did Trump made up his mind about Erdoğan’s intentions to invade northern Syria because, or despite the conclusions of his own Intelligence Community?

Donald Trump has handed Putin the Middle East on a plate

BUT THE 'GIFT' MAY PROVE A POISONED CHALICE FOR OVERAMBITIOUS RUSSIA

The one world figure who has emerged as the undisputed beneficiary of Donald Trump’s decision to disengage from the Syrian conflict is his Russian opposite number, Vladimir Putin.
The precise nature of the relationship between the American and Russian leaders remains one of the great unknowns of the Trump administration, especially concerning the issue of what role, if any, the Kremlin played in helping Mr Trump secure his election.
And if Mr Trump was minded to give Mr Putin an early Christmas present, it is difficult to imagine a more bountiful gesture than gifting the Russian leader the entire Middle East on a plate....

Love was in the air when Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner headed to their local synagogue with their three children on Tuesday as they continued their celebration of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
Ivanka, 37, and Jared, 38, put on a public display of affection while strolling through their upscale Washington, D.C. neighborhood with their kids in tow. Arabella, eight, walked alongside them, while Joseph, six, and Theodore, three, rode scooters.
The couple couldn't take their eyes off of each other as they walked with their arms wrapped around each other's waists. When they weren't holding each other close, the White House senior advisers walked hand in hand.
