Saved Stories - None: The National Interest: The Classic Remington Model 1100 Shotgun: All-Around Excellence Through the Decades
Sun, 23 Aug 2020 14:04:16 -0400
Richard Douglas
Security, Americas

We explain what makes this firearm among the best in the world.

The Remington Model 1100 has been the quintessential shotgun for homestead defenders, pro skeet shooters, and hunters of all experience levels for more than fifty years.
An extremely successful design of simplicity in the best ways has made this Remington one of the most popular autoloading all-purpose shotguns. With so many productions and guns out there, some older than the Ford Mustang, the temptation to purchase used is something that many buyers consider.
Accuracy
There is no question that the Remington is lethal. Regardless of barrel, load, or caliber, this baby was made to demolish any well-aimed target within 30 yards. Longer barrels, up to a whopping 30, are best for long-range trap shoots or hunting.
The Remington has proven synonymous with waterfowl hunting since its inception. Any time Im out on a hunt with my bird dogs and buddies, Im not the only one with my Remington at my side. Field-load performs with the same accuracy seen with target-load thanks to brilliant design. The consistency in popularity among my fellow hunters speaks volumes for reliable accuracy on target.
Also a regular in competitions and skeet shooting, the deadly accuracy of the Remington 1100 is legendary.
Reliability
Introduced in 1963, the Remington has a venerable reputation of reliability and toughness.
The clean design and ease of tear down for regular maintenance, make for easy long term care as well as easy access to the bits and pieces that can indicate if the Remington you are considering is up to snuff with its peers. A simple check of the O-ring for wear and tear can be a great clue to the upkeep from previous owners.
Regular cleaning will keep this champion of temerity free from failure for decades. Ive always paid close attention to the gas system where the gas ports meet the tube and watch to keep the crud that can collect there at bay.
As long as you stick to cleaning your Remington regularly, with a full break down after each day of shooting, this weapon will reward you with unwavering reliability.
Handling
The feel of the Remington 1100 shotgun is quite simply put, the way a shotgun should feel.
Perhaps this is due to the comfort of such a regular presence on the hunt dating back to my primary years, but Remington has evolved with the times and continues to maintain excellence in feel and handling.
Now you can find everything from the classic black with engraved walnut forend and stock, options that are fully wrapped in camo covering, all the way to a more futuristic tactical black and synthetic line. No matter which generation you choose, they will all have that same high-quality solid feel, without any rattle or wiggle.
Now I prefer the classic wood and black Remington, but that may be simply because thats what I grew up with, out in the fields. It feels good in the hand. Better, I think, than the synthetic 30 barrelled options, designed for skeet. The slick skeet options have a clean silver nickel finish, which is a smooth and mean look. Call me nostalgic though, because I still prefer my engraved stock and warm walnut any day.
Trigger
Most of the Remingtons, any that have gone through the years without being modified anyway, will have a solid and smooth nickel trigger that trips with just over 4 lbs. of pressure.
The trigger on used weapons needs attention to ensure good wear. A worn or loose carrier dog can prevent the trigger from engaging as its supposed to. Failure to identify this with some testing on a range can result in weapon jams.
The safety tends to be a bit clicky, and could potentially scare small game off if you arent careful, but overall the mechanisms are tried and true. You shouldnt have any trouble getting comfortable with your trigger pull on this steady horse.
Magazine and Reloading
The Remington 1100 carries four shots in the tube and one in the chamber and is a semi-auto shotgun designed to be used in any situation.
For my hunting, the muscle memory of loading has become so second nature that I have little issue with getting reloaded. You can modify it to a standard loading gate or an easy loader if you need to reload quickly. Especially for competition shooters, the modification may be what best suits.
There is also an ambidextrous bolt release, aka carrier release, to allow anyone the comfort of a quick reload.
Length and Weight
The length and weight of the Remington 1100 can be just as varied as the engraving and check patterns that youll find. This is a shotgun that comes in all shapes and sizes.
The evolution of the shotgun ranges from field guns, longer barrels for skeet and trap, to engraved keepsakes. Barrel lengths vary from the shortest 18 barrels to 30 for long-range accuracy. Those longest of barrels will put the overall length to a whopping 50 gun.
Averaging in weight between 8 to 9lbs, this solid weapon is a good carry that is balanced well. There just isnt anything much better than early morning, with my Remington settled perfectly in the crook of my arm, barrel down to the ground like my setters nose as we stalk along.
The barrels can be changed out for different uses. So, if you find the perfect Remington that may not be the appropriate length, its quite simple to adjust to what best suits.
Recoil Management
Recoil management is what makes the Remington 1100 shine.
The design, with its heft and balance, combined with the gas-operated action, makes this soft shooter a stand-out performer with significantly lower recoil. If you are testing used, a heavy kick may be a clue that something isnt quite right.
Remington technology continues to improve as the years go by. Simply modifications can be made to older weapons, or to those in need of some TLC, to improve the recoil management on any Remington. Shock absorbers or recoil pads are easy to install and can make the smooth fire even better.
Price
The price of the Remington, like so many other features, is as varied as the weapon itself.
You can easily find new Remington models priced well into $1,300 to $1,500 MSRP, and conversely, you will find an array of used models at an extremely modest $400 to $600.
This good news means that it is incredibly easy to find a reasonably affordable choice to start competing, as a first hunting shotgun or a wise choice for home defense. Attention to details in the used market, like a check for rust in the extractor-plunger hole, missing small pieces like the mag spring retainer or worn seals, can save incredible amounts of money.
My Verdict?
Theres a reason theyve been making this shotgun since 1963. Consistency in performance and a stellar reputation are well earned in the Remington 1100. Simple sleuthing in the used market may be worth your while. Investing in the latest technology for a weapon that will last your lifetime will be a good buy. No question here. No matter what look, caliber, barrel, or configuration you decide on, this is the perfect shotgun. Four million and counting...

Saved Stories - None: Trump campaign in 'substantially better position' than four years ago
Sun, 23 Aug 2020 13:00:33 -0400
White House senior adviser Jared Kushner is confident President Trump will win a second term in November after the Democratic National Convention.
Kushner, who is also Trump's son-in-law, said Democrats laid out a negative future for the country as opposed to what the Republicans have planned this week at their own convention, which will take place Aug. 24-27.
"We saw the Democrats with a dark vision for America," Kushner said Sunday on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, adding, "President Trump represents the American people. He’s the outsider president, and I think you’ll see a very hopeful version — vision for America that he’s going to be unleashing. You’re going to see a real diversity of the Republican Party that he’s built. You’re going to see it’s gonna be different than how the media tells you."
Despite polling giving Democratic nominee Joe Biden ahead, Kushner argued the Trump campaign is doing better than it was in 2016 and aims to propose policy solutions to problems facing the nation, which he claimed Democrats lacked at their convention.
"Unlike the Democrats last week where there were a lot of complaints, they didn’t offer much by way of policy or solutions," Kushner said. "... We feel like we’re in a substantially better position than we were four years ago, and we’re quite excited about the convention coming up this week and the campaign that will ensue after that."
Despite criticism about Trump's belief that mass mail-in voting risks election fraud, Kushner also defended the president suggesting in-person voting should be a safe option despite the coronavirus pandemic.
"We have a way of voting that’s been tried and true for many years," Kushner said. "People are comfortable with it. The president tweeted the other day, if you can protest in-person, you can vote in-person."

Saved Stories - None: A QAnon supporter used her car to attack random strangers who she suddenly decided were Satanic pedophiles
Sun, 23 Aug 2020 10:53:59 -0400
The Waco Tribune reports that a 30-year-old woman was arrested earlier this week for "driving while intoxicated and aggravated assault charges after she chased at least two cars and intentionally crashed into one, later telling police she thought she was chasing a pedophile who had kidnapped a girl."
The police reported that, "Ms. Fulbright pursued (the driver) through the parking lot striking her again and an uninvolved Dodge Durango before Ms. Fulbright crashed into a cement pylon at the gas pump" and that her blood-alcohol level was somewhere between 0.21% and 0.217%.
Right Wing Watch managed to interview some friends of Fulbright, who had this to say:
On Aug. 6, Fulbright sent [Mark] Mueller an "out of the blue" message containing a link to download the Trump 2020 campaign app. Mueller said he subsequently argued with Fulbright about Trump's political competency and during the argument, she claimed that Trump was "literally taking down the cabal and the pedophile ring."
"One by one," Fulbright wrote to Mueller. "What President has EVEN TALKED ABOUT IT? It's been going on for centuries."
[]
Sydney Molina, a former roommate of Fulbright, said that Fulbright "has a history of mental health issues" that have gone untreated. She added that Fulbright's family was "super huge" into supporting the president and that Fulbright was "feeding off her own family's crazy Trump love." At some point in May, Molina claims to have introduced Fulbright to QAnon.
"I was the one who originally sent her stuff, and her boyfriend sent her stuff, kind of like laughing at how ridiculous it is," Molina said.
[]
Mueller and Molina both said they were surprised to receive pro-QAnon messages from Fulbright, and they described her as a political "progressive" before she began following the far-right conspiracy theory.
[]
"She started sending me these crazy messages attacking me, 'I don't know what you believe anymore. You're the one that showed me this, and you're turning your back on it, so you're a part of it. You're involved,'" Molina recounted. "I couldn't say or do anything without her accusing me of being a satanist."
There are obviously a lot of unfortunate factors at play; and certainly, not everyone who believes in QAnon necessarily has a history of (alleged) mental health issues, or substance abuse. But this is a scary story of how a few conspiratorial hashtags and cryptic Facebook rants can pour gasoline onto every other part of a person's life and lead them into chaotic drunken sprees of vigilante attempted vehicular manslaughter.

Opposition Demonstration To Protest Against Presidential Election Results In MinskTens of thousands of anti-government protesters packed the streets of Minsk on Sunday as the army waded into Belarus’ political crisis, warning that it, not the police, would respond to any opposition unrest near the city’s national memorials.
Demonstrations have been held in the capital and other Belarusian towns since Aug. 9, when an election which protesters describe as rigged granted veteran leader Alexander Lukashenko a sixth term in office.
The streets of Minsk turned red and white as a flood of demonstrators carried flags symbolising their opposition to Lukashenko, demanding he quit after 26 years in power and new elections be held, videos showed.
They marched towards a monument that was surrounded by a chain of security service members clad in military uniform, a Reuters witness said.
The defence ministry said it had now taken over responsibility for the protection of such memorials, and that any unrest near them would elicit a response from the army.
Describing the protesters as “fascists” and writing the majority of its statement in capital letters, the defence ministry said the memorials, specifically to victims of the World War Two, were holy sites that must not be desecrated.
“WE CATEGORICALLY WARN: ANY VIOLATION OF PEACE AND ORDER IN SUCH PLACES – YOU WILL HAVE THE ARMY TO DEAL WITH NOW, NOT THE POLICE.”
In a statement the Belarus interior ministry warned that any unsanctioned protests were considered illegal and said 22 people had been arrested the previous day, when smaller-scale protests took place across 55 towns and cities.

Report: Israel pushed NSO spyware to Gulf states to help track dissidents

Government reported to mediate deals worth hundreds of millions with Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE; tech company denies claims: ‘We fully meet our human rights policy’

The Israeli government officially mediated the sale of spyware made by private firm NSO Group to a number of Gulf nations to help them in surveillance of opposition figures, in deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars over the past few years, the Haaretz daily reported on Sunday.
Contracts were reportedly signed with Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Ras Al-Khaimah. The report said Israel prohibited NSO from working with Qatar, an ally of Iran.
One deal alone was said to have been signed for $250 million, with no further details given.
“A product sold in Europe for $10 million can be sold in the Gulf for ten times that,” an individual familiar with the financials of NSO told the newspaper.
The report said that representatives of the Israeli government participated in some meetings between intelligence officials from Arab states and executives from NSO. Some of those meetings were said to have been held in Israel.
According to the report, the Israeli company only worked with governments and official organizations, but did not distinguish between democracies and dictatorships and had little sway over how the technology was used.
The company was said to have a team dedicated to sales in the Gulf, whose members all had foreign passports to ease travel. The report said each country was given a code name based on a car manufacturer beginning with the first letter of the country’s name: Saudi Arabia was Subaru, Bahrain was BMW and Jordan was Jaguar.
The report said that in NSO’s latest iteration of its hacking software, Pegasus 3, simply supplying the program with the phone number of the device one wants to hack usually allows the operator access to the device within several hours, with no action required by the targeted user.
Additionally, the report said NSO can “fully control” its software remotely, and shut it down or examine the intelligence being collected by its clients in real time.
Pegasus allows agents to effectively take control of a phone, surreptitiously controlling its cameras and microphones from remote servers and vacuuming up personal data and geolocations.
The company was said to have shut down the use of its software in Mexico after it was used against journalists, but the report said no such action had been taken in any of the Gulf states.
NSO is said to have also hired former Israeli security officers to help with the analysis of the Gulf information, separate to the phone hacking, as regimes were said to be struggling to make sense of the volume of data.
Unidentified employees told Haaretz that although the company has claimed it carefully regulates use of its software to only allow the tracking of criminals and suspected terrorists, there were no actual checks on its use.
According to the report, the software is designed to self-destruct if it detects the device it has been installed on has crossed a border into Israel, Iran, Russia, China or the United States.

The report also said that after the 2018 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, which allegedly involved use of NSO’s Pegasus software, some employees of the Israeli firm protested and a few quit.
NSO Group CEO Shalev Hulio denied any connection to the incident. The report pointed out that the company’s compliance rules differ from country to country, allowing the possibility that a Saudi dissident could be labeled a “terrorist.”
Earlier this month, Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced a deal to normalize relations, bringing ties into the open that had been conducted in the shadows for many years.
A 2019 Amnesty International report found that UAE authorities “subjected detainees, including foreign nationals, to arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and enforced disappearance.”
Human Rights Watch report for 2019 found that “UAE authorities have launched a sustained assault on freedom of expression and association since 2011. The UAE arbitrarily detains and forcibly disappears individuals who criticize the authorities within the UAE’s borders.”
In response to the Haaretz reported NSO issued a statement denying the claims made.
“The claims in the article are false and untrue. We are very proud of our technology, which each and every day helps to foil terror and prevent serious crime and pedophilia around the world, while we fully meet our compliance and human rights policy, which is unprecedented in the world,” the statement read.
Last month a US judge ruled that a lawsuit brought by WhatsApp against NSO Group can go ahead, meaning the Israeli spyware firm could be compelled to reveal information about its clients and practices, the Guardian reported.

This February 19, 2014, photo, shows WhatsApp and Facebook app icons on a smartphone in New York (AP Photo/Patrick Sison)
WhatsApp is suing NSO Group, accusing it of using the Facebook-owned messaging service to conduct cyber-espionage on journalists, human rights activists and others. The accounts said to have been targeted included those of senior government officials, journalists, and human rights activists worldwide.
The lawsuit said the Pegasus software developed by NSO was designed to be remotely installed to hijack devices using the Android, iOS, and BlackBerry operating systems.
NSO Group has previously claimed that it only licenses its software to governments for “fighting crime and terror” and that it investigates credible allegations of misuse, but activists argue the technology has been instead used for human rights abuses.
Agencies contributed to this report.

FBI posts anti-Semitic text 'The Protocol of the Elders of Zion' on Twitter

After backlash, FBI says file of text that claims that the Jews plan to take over the world was uploaded automatically under the Freedom of Information Act and "regrets" the distress it might have caused.

Without providing context, an official FBI Twitter account shared a link to a copy on the bureau's website of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an infamous and classic anti-Semitic text.
The fabrication, which was shown to be plagiarized from several earlier sources, was first published in Russia in 1903, translated into multiple languages and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century.
Follow Israel Hayom on Facebook and Twitter
The tweet was from the FBI Records Vault, which posts archived bureau records.
The Twitter post about the text, whose author is unknown and which scapegoats Jews such as baselessly claiming there's a Jewish plan for world domination, ignited a backlash.
"Did you guys get hacked by David Duke!?" wrote StopAntisemitism.org.
Historian Simon Schama tweeted "that this has to be done right away…! Appalling not have explanatory context …"
The FBI file shared on Twitter includes reports from the FBI classifying the book as false, a 1964 report from the Senate Judiciary Committee, in which they label the text as "fabricated" and "crude and vicious nonsense," and several letters to former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover about a resurgence of the text.
It also contains a letter from a so-called confidential informant who sent Hoover the Protocols and other inflammatory content about a baseless Jewish Communist conspiracy in 1949 and Hoover's polite note thanking said informant.
In a statement, the FBI said that the file was posted in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
"Earlier today, FOIA materials were posted to the FBI's Vault and FOIA Twitter account via an automated process without further outlining the context of the documents. We regret that this release may have inadvertently caused distress among the communities we serve," said the bureau.
"The FBI often receives information from members of the public, which is captured in our permanent files and released under FOIA law. The FBI must process historical files that were collected in the past some of which may be considered offensive."
The FBI makes records requested by three or more requesters available to the public by posting on the "Vault," the FBI's electronic FOIA reading room located on the FBI's website. As per standard procedure for FOIA, these materials became available for release and were posted automatically.
The FBI's FOIA Twitter account (@FBIRecordsVault) is automated and automatically tweets new Vault posts as they are published on the Vault website. New posts added to the Vault will appear on the Vault's "Recently Added" page. An automated system monitors that page via an RSS feed and feeds links to new FOIA releases onto the @FBIRecordsVault Twitter account.

London’s famous Tower Bridge, which crosses the River Thames in the heart of the British capital, was stuck open Saturday, leaving traffic in chaos and onlookers amazed at the sight.
The historic bascule-and-suspension bridge failed to close after opening to allow ships to pass underneath on the Thames. London police tweeted shortly after 5 p.m. that the bridge was closed to pedestrians and traffic and that mechanics were working to fix the problem. An hour later, police tweeted that the bridge had reopened.
Tower Bridge is 244 meters (800 feet) long and its towers are 65 meters (213 feet) high. It was built between 1886 and 1894.

A new documentary draws comparisons between Donald Trump and a pair of despotic world leaders, with some top psychologists comparing the president to Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
As The Daily Beast reported, the yet-to-be-released feature film, #Unfit, uses interviews with a number of psychologists and prominent critics of the president who probe his mental state and what they see as tyrannical tendencies. That includes Justin Frank, a former clinical professor of psychiatry at the George Washington University Medical Center and author of books on the minds of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
As the report noted, Frank did not mince words when it came to his assessment of Trump.
“Trump is a sociopath. A sadist. A con artist. A racist. A misogynist. A sexist in general,” Frank said. “And I think it is a problem.”
Fellow psychological expert John Gartner shared a similar assessment, saying that he shares qualities with autocrats like Mussolini and Hitler.
“Gartner’s claim that ‘they’re cut from the same cloth’ is bolstered by other historians and mental health professionals who draw direct links between Trump’s MO and those of 1930s fascists who exploited and magnified existing economic fears, prejudices, and discontent to seize power and then systematically neuter institutions that might challenge him,” the report from The Daily Beast noted.
This is not the first time that critics have drawn comparisons between Trump and authoritarian leaders. Many of his more vocal opponents have struck the president for what appeared to be admiration of other world leaders with authoritarian tendencies. Many have seized on statements from Trump floating the idea of remaining in his office beyond two terms, which would be a violation of the U.S. Constitution.
As The Inquisitr reported, Rep. James Clyburn has raised a similar concern, saying he believes Trump may refuse to leave office if he loses to Joe Biden in November.
“I feel very strongly that he is Mussolini, Putin is Hitler,” said Clyburn.
The film #Unfit is the latest project from psychiatric or psychological experts that calls into question Trump’s mental state and fitness to hold office. Yale University psychiatrist Bandy X. Lee has led many of these efforts, speaking out against what she sees as dangerous tendencies from Trump and signs of potential cognitive decline.
These statements have generated controversy in the medical community, where it has traditionally been frowned upon to speak publicly and offer a potential diagnosis about a person who is not a patient.

Saved Stories - None: Steve Bannons Downfall Is a Warning Sign for Trump
Sat, 22 Aug 2020 06:34:23 -0400

Steve Bannon’s arrest on charges that he defrauded donors to a right-wing immigration group for $1 million marks the end of a political era—the era when a Trumpian admixture of economic populism and nativist immigration policy looked as if it could, as Bannon once put it to me, deliver the Republican Party “a hammerlock on the Electoral College.”
At the time he made this assessment, in the days after Trump’s 2016 victory, it seemed entirely plausible that Bannon, Donald Trump’s campaign chairman and future chief strategist, was right. Before Trump, the GOP had imagined its future lay in purging its racist fringe and soft-pedaling its brand of laissez-faire economics to a diversifying nation that had spurned the 2012 Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. The Republican Party “autopsy” conducted in 2013 after their loss warned that the GOP risked falling into oblivion if it didn’t present a more welcoming face to immigrants, minorities, and young people.

Trump, of course, egged on by Bannon, instead offered a turbocharged anti-immigrant nationalism that promised to revive working-class fortunes, a message that resonated particularly among Rust Belt voters who’d previously voted Democratic. He was certain that Republican Party leaders would recognize this. “What Reince [Priebus] and Paul Ryan realize now,” Bannon told me after the election, “is that our message was the right one and that it’s gonna deliver Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania to the Republican Party for a generation.” This was the Trump hammerlock.
Had Trump delivered on his promise and instituted the kind of working-class populism Bannon was espousing in 2016, he’d likely be in a better position than he is today. Certainly, Bannon would be. But that never happened. “There was only a plan to get elected,” says Sam Nunberg, a former Trump staffer. “There was never a plan to govern.”
Instead, the Trump administration proved chaotic from the outset and the Trump-Bannon marriage quickly blew apart. Once in office, Trump lost any interest he’d had in economic populism and signed a tax cut that favored the rich, while Bannon, who clashed with colleagues and members of Trump’s family and had no experience in or talent for policymaking, was quickly forced out of his chief strategist job.
Even after Bannon left the White House in 2017, he held fast to his belief that a politics of hard-edged nationalism could deliver the right politician the presidency. Resentful of his ouster—“I’m sick of playing wet nurse to a 71-year-old man,” he griped of Trump—Bannon began fitting himself for the role of political leader. Upon leaving the White House, he tried to marshal a slate of nationalist candidates, including Alabama Senate hopeful Roy Moore, who would rout the GOP establishment and “carry Trumpism beyond Trump.”
Bannon was a potent enough figure on the right that he traveled to Europe to spread Trump-style nationalist populism. At the same time, as I reported in 2018, Bannon began scheming to start a new U.S. political party that he planned to call the “National Union Party”—the temporary name Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party had adopted in 1864 to attract War Democrats and Unionists—imagining that he could unite disaffected populists on both ends of the political spectrum and make his own run at the White House.
Bannon’s fantasy never came to fruition. Instead, as often happened, his indiscretion became his undoing. After the author Michael Wolff quoted Bannon disparaging members of Trump’s family, Trump angrily ostracized him from the Republican Party. This included pressuring Rebekah Mercer, a major Trump donor and backer of Breitbart News, to oust Bannon from his position atop the conservative publication.
Once robbed of his influence in the White House and at Breitbart News, Bannon came to understand that it was Trump, not Bannon or his ideas, that excited Republican voters. Furthermore, it became obvious that any hope Bannon had of exerting influence on national politics was contingent on his worming himself back into Trump’s good graces.
To do this, Bannon swallowed his pride and began making boosterish appearances on Fox News to loudly advocate for the same president who’d publicly destroyed his standing in Republican politics and even issued a White House press release saying that Bannon had “lost his mind.”
To regain relevance, Bannon became active in anti-immigrant organizations like We Build the Wall, whose leaders were indicted by federal prosecutors on Thursday, and anti-China groups like the Committee on the Present Danger (Bannon was arrested aboard a 150-foot yacht belonging to Chinese billionaire tycoon-in-exile Guo Wengui).
But Bannon was no more effective in bringing about the policies Trump had campaigned on than Trump was. The supposed purpose of We Build the Wall was to build a privately funded barrier at the U.S.-Mexico border—the one that Trump had promised to erect in 2016 (and make Mexico pay for) but failed to do as president. Just as Trump sold a bill of goods to his followers, prosecutors allege that Bannon and the leaders of We Build the Wall were essentially grifters who raised $25 million by preying on the nativist political desires of donors. “The defendants defrauded hundreds of thousands of donors, capitalizing on their interest in funding a border wall to raise millions of dollars, under the false pretense that all of that money would be spent on construction,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a statement.

The idea that Bannon and a group of right-wing extremists would actually build a border wall was ridiculous on its face. Last month, ProPublica discovered that a three-mile section of wall the group erected too close to the Rio Grande had already begun to erode and was in danger of falling down. The true purpose of the project, as Trump himself seemed to discern, was to bring attention, acclaim, and money to its sponsors in a way that would attract the president’s notice and help Bannon to rehabilitate his tattered image. “I haven’t been dealing with him for a very long period of time,” Trump told reporters on Thursday. “[I] don’t know anything about the project at all ... I don’t like that project. I thought it was being done for showboating reasons.”
The symbolism of Bannon’s grand political project ending in his indictment and arrest is timely, if nothing else. Precisely four years ago, he’d just taken command of Trump’s sputtering, left-for-dead presidential campaign and was about to steer it to the greatest upset in U.S. political history.
But the political realignment Bannon thought was happening four years ago always depended on Trump delivering what he’d campaigned on. The details of Bannon’s indictment lay bare the path he’s traveled since the days not so long ago when he was regarded in some circles as “the second most powerful man in the world.”
Although he’s avoided indictment, Trump’s path hasn’t been much smoother. He survived impeachment, but he hasn’t delivered a border wall, middle-class prosperity, or an American condition that can be considered anything like “great again.” It takes just a glance at the polls—Trump is behind in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania—to see that the electoral lock Bannon envisioned, like so much else, is a fiction and that Trump’s political career, like that of his former strategist, could be about to draw to a close.

Saved Stories - None: Senate Russia report proves Trump was wrong, and Mueller was right. Do voters care?
Sat, 22 Aug 2020 06:01:05 -0400
The Senate Intelligence Committee should be applauded for releasing the fifth and final volume on their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. With over 200 witness interviews and roughly one million documents reviewed, the nearly 1000-page report documents in detail the comprehensive campaign conducted by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his proxies to seek influence within the Trump campaign, help President Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election, and amplify polarization and division within American society.
Far from a hoax, as the president so often claimed, the report reveals how the Trump campaign willingly engaged with Russian operatives implementing the influence effort
Far from a hoax, as the president so often claimedthe report reveals how the Trump campaign willingly engaged with Russian operatives implementing the influence effort. For instance, the report exposes interactions and information exchanged between Russian intelligence officer Konstantin Kilimnik and then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. According to the report, campaign figures “presented attractive targets for foreign influence, creating notable counterintelligence vulnerabilities.” (Manafort was later convicted of tax and bank fraud.)
Concluding one of the highest-profile congressional investigations in recent memory, the report also uncovers abuses within the U.S. government’s investigation of this operation. These methods require review and reform.
The bipartisan tone of the majority of the report, released by a committee chaired by Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, should be welcomed by all Americans who want our elected leaders to protect American sovereignty. National security should never be a partisan issue.

Get the think newsletter.
Tragically, however, some of the most egregious practices from the 2016 presidential campaign and documented by the Senate investigation are repeating themselves in the 2020 presidential campaign. Once again, President Vladimir Putin wants Trump to win and appears to be seeking to undermine the legitimacy of our election. Just like in 2016, Putin has deployed his conventional media, his social media operations and his intelligence assets to pursue these objectives.
Most shockingly, Trump and his allies have decided to — again — play right along. Because waiting for criminal investigations or more congressional hearings will be too late, it will be up to American voters to decide when and how cooperation with foreign actors during a presidential election crosses the line. Trump activities to date are not appropriate.
On Aug. 7 of this year the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) warned about foreign interference in the 2020 election: “We assess that Russia is using a range of measures to primarily denigrate former Vice President Biden and what it sees as an anti-Russia ‘establishment.’” The ODNI report noted that pro-Russia Ukrainian parliamentarian Andriy Derkach is spreading false claims about Biden as part of this effort. “Some Kremlin-linked actors are also seeking to boost President Trump’s candidacy on social media and Russian television,” it observed.

Related

Instead of criticizing this behavior, however, Trump and his allies are amplifying and promoting Russian disinformation online. Perhaps most amazingly, Trump is circulating to his 85 million Twitter followers material provided by foreign actors designed to discredit Biden. Derkach — the pro-Russia Ukrainian oligarch — is reportedly providing these slanderous materials to Republicans, including Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa.
Johnson and Grassley have also defended the use of material from former Ukrainian diplomat Andriy Telizhenko, who is working with Rudy Guilani to spread a discrediting anti-Biden narrative. In fact, Johnson commented directly in an interview about his new investigation of U.S. intelligence activities during the Obama era, “I would think it would certainly help Donald Trump win reelection and certainly be pretty good… evidence about not voting for Vice President Biden.” Following public pressure and increasing tensions, the Senators released a statement publicly denying participating in the Russian disinformation campaign. Yet, it all feels like a replay of Nataliya Veselnitskaya’s mission to Trump headquarters in the summer of 2016 to provide “dirt” on then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton – only now, all in the open.

Amidst a patchwork of responses from the U.S. government and social media companies, many analysts and non-governmental organizations have become more skillful in tracking and aggressively countering disinformation operations. But exposure alone does not deter adversaries, nor does it stop the evolution of their tactics. Furthermore, divisions on race, religion, and immigration in the United States have only deepened in the past year. With China, Iran, and Venezuela now in the disinformation game, our current presidential election is, in some ways, already more chaotic than 2016.
After revelations about Russian interference in 2016, including the targeting of elections systems in all 50 states, American leaders concerned with defending our sovereignty and protecting our national security should have established a bipartisan commission – as they did after September 11, 2001 — to investigate all dimensions of external influence, including the Obama administration’s response. Trump opposed such a commission. Subsequently, Robert Mueller’s team at the Department of Justice was assigned the narrower assignment of investigating criminal activity, which they discovered along with at least 140 contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian nationals. Both Russians and Americans were indicted, some of whom are in jail today. But Mueller’s focus on criminal activity ignored counterintelligence threats that developed during 2016.
This final volume from the Senate Intelligence Committee has documented in greater detail the counterintelligence threats at stake. Now, the American voters must decide what is fair and honorable in political competition — and what is not.

It is wrong to solicit, let alone use, help from a foreign government to win an election. It is especially wrong to seek such assistance from an adversary like Russia, and to do so in a presidential election. We don’t need Putin’s help in choosing our president. We, the American voters, can do that on our own.
Trump’s campaign encouraged Putin’s help in 2016 and celebrated that assistance when it arrived, especially materials that were stolen by Russian intelligence officers and published by WikiLeaks. Putin violated American sovereignty — stealing private property, and then using it to help Trump and hurt Clinton.
When asked about these facts at a July 2018 press conference in Helsinki while standing next to Putin, Trump denied the findings of his — of our — own intelligence community, and instead defended the Russian autocrat. Trump has since remained loyal to Putin, not once criticizing him in public, and often undermining policies from his own administration to contain and deter Putin’s belligerent behavior abroad. Trump has refused to pledge that he will not accept foreign help this fall. When asked last year about accepting dirt from a foreign government on his electoral opponents, Trump bluntly stated, “I think I'd take it."

Related

In contrast, Biden has affirmed that his campaign will not use information or accept assistance provided by foreign actors, an act that our Stanford research team urged all presidential candidates take in our 2019 report on the integrity of U.S. elections. In addition, Biden has assured Americans that he would retaliate in response to any foreign interference.
Trump and Biden’s contrasting positions on Russian interference in American elections are clear. Whether voters care about these differences, however, is not as obvious. On Election Day, we will find out.

Saved Stories - None: NYC Rat Complaints Scurrying Back Up After Pandemic Decline
Fri, 21 Aug 2020 18:28:37 -0400
NEW YORK CITY — Rats became less of a daily complaint for New Yorkers as they first hunkered down for the coronavirus, 311 data shows.
But the city's rodents couldn't squirm out of attention for long — complaints are swarming back to pre-pandemic levels and officials recently warned piling trash could provide a "welcome mat for the rats."
"Now, this is like rat city because of too much garbage in the street," said Congressman Adriano Espaillat recently.
Rodent complaints to 311 took a dip in March — the month COVID-19 officially arrived in New York City and the state went into lockdown — according to data.
Operators logged 1,611 total complaints compared to 2,395 in March last year, data shows. Complaints dipped further in April — 1,575 compared to 2,800 the year before.
There weren't necessarily fewer rats. Inside Edition in May filmed rats swarming over Manhattan streets and garbage cans. And experts told MarketWatch that people likely had bigger worries in the pandemic than rodents.
Sure enough, complaints steadily climbed as New Yorkers emerged out of widespread isolation into welcoming warm weather.
They reached 3,006 in July, roughly the same number as that month last year, according to 311 data.
Rodent complaints include rat sightings, mouse sightings, conditions that attract rodents and signs of rodents.
Here's a comparison of complaints that were listed simply as "rat sightings" between 2019 and so far in 2020:
  • January 2019 — 1,020
  • February 2019 — 956
  • March 2019 — 1,126
  • April 2019 — 1,510
  • May 2019 — 1,863
  • June 2019 — 1,822
  • July 2019 — 1,824
  • August 2019 — 1,862
  • September 2019 — 1,640
  • October 2019 — 1,405
  • November 2019 — 980
  • December 2019 — 800
  • January 2020 — 1,064
  • February 2020 — 1,020
  • March 2020 — 968
  • April 2020 — 947
  • May 2020 — 1,664
  • June 2020 — 1,658
  • July 2020 — 1,775
  • August 2020 (as of Aug. 18) — 1,035
For a pandemic New York City that has seen scores of residents and businesses leave, the rat resurgence is one part of everyday life that's returning to normal.

Forensic assessment may be based on common sense assumptions rather than science.
Int J Law Psychiatry. 2020 Jul - Aug;71:101607

Abstract
Forensic assessments must be scientifically founded, because courts should obtain expert evidence with acceptable evidential value. In Slovenia, professional guidelines of forensic personality assessment are too general and not always in line with international professional recommendations. Thus, experts have no strict guidelines which would lead them to scientifically grounded expert opinions. The aim of the research was to establish which tests are employed in forensic assessment in Slovenia and to what extent the professional guidelines for expert opinions are followed. A total of 166 forensic personality assessments were reviewed, representing the majority of expert opinions issued in the period 2003-2018. The results of the analysis revealed that questionable projective tests are most commonly used. Typically, an expert opinion was rendered based on two tests, at least one of which was projective. What is more, expert opinions did not include hypotheses, in-text citations, reference lists, or proof of the expert witness's competence. The tests and their results were mentioned briefly and inadequately, without mention of their reliability and validity. Possible malingering of the person being evaluated was not detected. Professional guidelines were not followed and non-standardized tests without normative values and of questionable scientific merit were predominantly used, despite lack of proof that they truly measure what they claim to be measuring. These findings significantly differ from the results of similar research, raising serious concerns over the credibility of expert opinions in Slovenia.

55 years in prison for brother of Manchester Arena bomber Hashem Abedi
The brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, has been jailed for at least 55 years for his role in the attack. Its the longest specific term that’s ever been handed down in England.
A life sentence could not be imposed on Hashem Abedi, because he was under twenty one when he committed the crime. 22 people were killed in the bombing in May 2017.

Thu, 20 Aug 2020 07:25:53 -0400
From: VOAvideo
Duration: 00:48

Heavy rains drenched the Indian city of Gurugram, Wednesday, August 19, wreaking havoc as waterlogged streets caused massive traffic jams.
People waded through waist-high waters.
City authorities deployed teams to pump water from a flooded underpass.
Meanwhile, heavy showers in the southern city of Belagavi upended daily routines as widespread construction and clogged drains and waterways have made the area increasingly vulnerable to flooding during the monsoon.

From: PBSNewsHour

Former President Barack Obama said his successor, President Donald Trump, has not taken the position seriously since he took office, and the country has suffered as a result. Donald Trump hasnt grown into the job because he cant, Obama said on the third night of the Democratic National Convention. And the consequences of that failure are severe. He said that lives have been lost to COVID-19, the economic crisis has worsened and democratic institutions have been threatened under Trumps leadership. The coronavirus pandemic upended both parties traditional conventions. Instead of in-person events, the DNC program each night features a number of speakers and musical performances virtually across the country.
